Elmo is a 3½-year-old furry red Muppet monster with an orange nose who appears on the PBS television series Sesame Street. He speaks in a falsetto voice and almost always refers to himself in third person. He debuted with the name Baby Monster during the early 1970s, when he usually only appeared in the background and was performed by numerous Muppeteers. He was eventually renamed Elmo in season 12, when he was performed by Brian Muehl. After Muehl's departure, he was briefly puppeteered by Richard Hunt, who shortly afterward tossed the role to Kevin Clash, who portrayed the character from then until his resignation in 2012 due to his sexual misconduct, after which Ryan Dillon took over the role in 2013. Under Clash's run with the character, Elmo's popularity on the show rose, especially when a toy in his image, Tickle Me Elmo, became the hottest-selling children's toy of 1996. Since then, Elmo has made starring roles in several Sesame Street-based Christmas specials.

Appearances[]

Sesame Street and related productions[]

  • Elmo Saves Christmas - Elmo stars as the main protagonist in the third Sesame Street Christmas special. After saving Santa from the chimney, he is rewarded a magic snow globe that grants him three wishes. Witnessing the happiness on Christmas Day, he uses his second wish to make it Christmas every day. Santa warns him that Christmas wouldn't be as special if it's every day and has his reindeer-in-training, Lightning, fly Elmo into the future so he sees it himself. As the seasons change, he sees everyone's happiness wane: all the businesses are closed, Big Bird hasn't gotten to see Snuffy who left for Cincinatti on Christmas Eve, Grover struggles to sell Christmas trees which have become an endangered species, Santa and his elves are being overworked, and the other holidays like Easter (the same day as Christ's resurrection) and Independence Day (a day where also Christmas in July is ironically celebrated) are overshadowed by Christmas. On the actual Christmas Day, Sesame Street has become cheerless, leading Elmo to finally realize that his wish was a bad idea. He attempts to use the snow globe to undo it, but he shakes it too hard, it flies out of his hands, and breaks on the ground. But then Elmo remembers Lightning's time traveling powers and has him fly back to the Christmas Eve when it all started when he saved Santa from the chimney, and this time he chooses a Moo-Bunny toy instead. He learns his lesson that Christmas is best celebrated once a year and spends Christmas Day with his friends.

Other Christmas productions[]

  • A Muppet Family Christmas - Prior to any of the above-listed Sesame Street Christmas specials, Elmo's actual first appearance in any Christmas special was in this 1987 crossover special, where he and his fellow Sesame Street Muppets join Kermit and his Muppet Show costars at Fozzie's mother's farmhouse to spend Christmas. Since the special was made before Elmo's rise in popularity, he is not as prominent here as he would be in later specials. He can be seen portraying one of Santa's reindeer in the Sesame Street gang's performance of The Night Before Christmas. Also, the special's original broadcast included a brief shot in which he helps Fozzie turn on the Christmas tree lights; this was cut in subsequent broadcasts as well as the home video releases.
  • Michael Bublé: Home for the Holidays
  • Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir - Elmo and several of his costars made a special guest appearance at the 2014 concert.
  • The Toycracker - Elmo was one of the licensed characters featured in this Target commercial.
  • Christmas in Rockefeller Center - As a tie-in with Sesame Street: The Nutcracker Starring Elmo & Tango, Elmo was one of the Sesame Street Muppets who appeared in the 2022 edition.

Mentions in other Christmas specials[]

In the Family Guy episode "Road to the North Pole", when Brian tells Stewie that Santa Claus isn't real, Stewie doesn't believe him and sarcastically asks if Elmo isn't real either.
