Bart's Christmas chalkboard gag

Bartholomew "Bart" JoJo Simpson is one of the main characters from the animated sitcom The Simpsons. He is the mischievous, rebellious, idiotic and "potentially dangerous" eldest child of Homer and Marge Simpson, and the older brother of Lisa and Maggie Simpson. He is a proudly self-proclaimed underachiever who is always pulling off various pranks.

  • "Simpson Christmas"
  • "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" - At the beginning of the show's first episode, Bart messes up his class's performance of "Jingle Bells" by singing the "Batman smells" version when they get to the chorus. Later, when he and Lisa write their Christmas lists, Bart wishes for a tattoo, which Marge and Homer refuse to get him. When the family goes out Christmas shopping, Bart sneaks off to get a tattoo anyway, going for a "Mother" tattoo that he thinks Marge will like. However, Marge comes in on him getting the tattoo before it's finished and is forced to spend the family's Christmas money on getting it removed. This incident, coupled with Mr. Burns not giving Homer his Christmas bonus, leads Bart's father to get a second job as a mall Santa. Bart, on a dare from his friends, goes to visit "Santa" and tries to pull his beard off. After Homer explains his situation ("You must really love us to sink so low"), Bart encourages him to take Barney Gumble's suggestion of betting his paltry paycheck on dog racing at Springfield Downs, believing that a miracle will soon happen to them (due to the Christmas stories he's seen on TV). However, Homer bets his earnings on the very slow Santa's Little Helper, who loses the race (to which Bart remarks, "It doesn't seem possible, but I guess TV has betrayed me"). After Santa's Little Helper is disowned by his original owner, Bart asks Homer if they can keep him, which Homer ultimately agrees to.
  • "Marge Be Not Proud" - Bart has the leading role in the show's second Christmas episode. Here, he desires the very violent fighting video game Bonestorm, which Marge and Homer refuse to buy, and Milhouse refuses to share with him. When Bart goes to the Try-N-Save discount store, he notices the games' display case has been left open and, after some contemplation, tries to shoplift a copy of Bonestorm. Right as he's about to get out with the game, however, he is caught by the store's security officer, Detective Don Brodka, who leaves a message about this on the Simpsons' answering machine. Bart manages to replace the tape on the answering machine before his family can hear it, but the next day, he learns that the family is going to the Try-N-Save to get their picture taken. Bart attempts to stay hidden, but Don Brodka catches him again and shows the Simpsons footage of him shoplifting the previous day. Homer and especially Marge are disappointed in their son, to the point that Marge stops showing affection towards him and they leave him out of family activities. Fearing he has lost his mother's love, Bart decides to repent by getting a picture of himself taken at the Try-N-Save and paying for it in full, which he then presents to Marge as an early Christmas present. In return, Marge gives Bart his present early, but to his disappointment (which he keeps hidden), it's the very dull golf game Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge.
  • "Miracle on Evergreen Terrace" - Bart has the starring role again in the show's third Christmas episode. After Marge decrees that the family is not to open their Christmas presents until after 7 AM and confiscates the alarm clocks, Bart drinks a dozen glasses of water on Christmas Eve so that he will have to get up to use the bathroom early. Sure enough, after getting up at 5 in the morning, he goes and opens his presents, one of which is a remote-controlled fire truck called the Inferno Buster 3000. However, as he's playing with it, the toy lives up to its name when it crashes into the tree, setting it and the presents on fire. Bart manages to extinguish the fire before it spreads any further and then buries the burnt evidence under the snow in the front yard. When the rest of the family wakes up, Bart tells them that a burglar made off with the tree and presents. When the police come to investigate, local reporter Kent Brockman reports about the "burglary" on the news, leading everyone else in Springfield to give the Simpsons a new tree and donate $15,000 (which Homer spends a new car that he then drives into a lake). Bart eventually confesses to his family what really happened, and while they try to maintain the lie during a follow-up report, Santa's Little Helper digs up the burned tree. This angers everyone else in Springfield, who now believe they were scammed, and they demand to be repaid the $15,000; it's only after they all rob the Simpsons' house that the family is finally forgiven.

He then has a dream inspired by The Polar Express in which the eponymous locomotive brings him to Santa's workshop. After getting a job in gift-wrap, Bart manages to work his way up the corporate ladder and is able to confront Santa (played here by Bart's idol, Krusty the Clown). Santa manages to talk Bart out of shooting him by telling him that he's broke because giving out free toys in exchange for cookies and milk isn't a good business for him. However, after Bart leaves, the viewer learns that Santa's lying about being broke.
