Buttercup is one of the three protagonists of the Cartoon Network original show The Powerpuff Girls. She is the hot-headed tomboy of the trio, and as such, she is the toughest fighter and always willing to jump into battle.

In the anime adaptation Powerpuff Girls Z, Buttercup (also known as Kaoru Matsubara in the original Japanese version) is more or less the same as her original series counterpart. She is the most athletic girl at her school and hates anything "girly". Her weapon of choice in the anime series is a giant mallet.
