Marvin the Martian is a character from the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies cartoon shorts. Introduced in the 1948 short Haredevil Hare, he is a citizen of the planet Mars who was created by Chuck Jones as an antagonist for Bugs Bunny, intended to be the polar opposite of Yosemite Sam. Unlike most other Looney Tunes antagonists, Marvin is quiet and soft-spoken, but his actions prove to be incredibly destructive and legitimately dangerous. Marvin only appeared in five shorts in the original Looney Tunes series and was not given his official name until the character attracted merchandising interest, but has made many appearances in subsequent Looney Tunes-related productions afterward.
Appearances in Christmas specials
As Marvin was not a major character in the original Looney Tunes shorts, he did not appear in any Christmas productions until the 2006 direct-to-video film Bah, Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas. In the film, he appears as an employee at Daffy Duck's "Lucky Duck Super Store". Marvin is homesick for his planet, Mars, and wants to go back for Christmas (though he also mentions that he is planning to destroy the Earth as well). At first, Daffy refuses to let him take Christmas off, since he expects the employees to work on Christmas Day. After being visited by the abrasive yet well-intentioned Christmas ghosts, the reformed Daffy gives Marvin a rocket that will go faster than the speed of light, allowing him to make it to Mars by yesterday. Marvin and his dog K-9 make a very brief cameo in The Looney Tunes Show episode "A Christmas Carol". During the closing song, "Christmas Rules", Marvin is shown using his space laser to generate a holiday-themed laser show.
