Schroeder is a character from the long-running comic strip Peanuts, created by Charles M. Schulz. He is distinguished by his precocious skill at playing the toy piano, as well as by his love of classical music and the composer Ludwig van Beethoven in particular. Schroeder is also the catcher on Charlie Brown's baseball team, though he is always seen walking back to the mound with the baseball, never throwing it (admitting in one strip he didn't want the other team to discover his lack of ability). He is also the object of the unrequited infatuation of Lucy van Pelt, who constantly leans on his piano.
Appearances in Christmas specials
- A Charlie Brown Christmas - In the first Peanuts Christmas special, Schroeder is first seen ice-skating with the rest of the kids and later throwing snowballs at a tin can on a fence (the latter scene was cut from the special's TV broadcasts from 1966 to 1997). During the play rehearsals, he continually plays "Linus and Lucy" on his toy piano, and later tells Lucy that he has opted to play Beethoven's "Für Elise", which he says is Beethoven-style Christmas music. Lucy then requests him to play "Jingle Bells", though to his annoyance, she only recognizes the song when he taps the melody on one key of the piano.
- Charlie Brown's Christmas Tales - Schroeder briefly appears playing hockey at the beginning of Snoopy's segment. Lucy asks him if he would like to be her partner in her ice-skating club's Christmas show, but he refuses. Later, during Lucy's own segment, she gives Schroeder a list of things that he might want to give her, but he promptly throws it away.
- I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown
Other Christmas productions
- "The Fight Before Christmas" - In this episode of The Simpsons, Schroeder is seen playing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" on his piano when Bart Simpson arrives at the North Pole.
