"Storybook Holiday" is a special half-hour Christmas-themed episode of the Warner Bros. animated television series Krypto the Superdog, based on characters from DC Comics. It was the twenty-sixth and final episode produced for the show's first season.
Synopsis[]
It’s the holiday season, and Krypto is looking forward to celebrate Christmas. Meanwhile, Kevin is yelling at his cousin Bailey because the latter has snatched the toy from the former. Kevin’s relatives - his grandpa, aunt, and grandma - have arrived for a visit. Kevin’s mother suggests that he can take Krypto for a walk. Along the streets, Kevin wants to buy a fairy tale storybook for his sister Melanie.
As soon as Krypto and Kevin get home, most of Kevin’s relatives are already at home. Still ticked off, Kevin is scolded by his mother. Upon retreating to his room, he discovers something mysterious that is dropped from the fairy tale book. He reads the storybook spell: “Magic winds that blow on high. To the storyland I fly.”
Krypto turns into Superdog and flies into the magical storybook to look for his missing friend.
The duo manage to go back to reality in the nick of time. Kevin goes downstairs to join the group hug from his relatives, wishing them happy holidays. But Krypto stays in Kevin’s room because of Uncle Dexter’s dog allergies. Bailey returns Kevin’s toy that he has snatched from Kevin earlier. The episode ends with Krypto closing the book with the last page showing of the silhouettes of Krypto and Kevin walking under the full moon, along with the words “THE END”.
Availability[]
The episode was made available on the Krypto the Superdog: The Complete Series DVD set, released on August 2, 2022.
Notes[]
- The fairy tale characters Kevin and Krypto encounter all resemble Kevin's family, in a manner similar to the 1939 MGM version of The Wizard of Oz.
- The scene where Krypto defeats The Big Bad Wolf by throwing him to the mountains is a nod to how Mildew Wolf gets defeated by Bristlehound in the It's the Wolf segments from Hanna-Barbera's Cattanooga Cats.
