"The Gift" is the second Christmas episode of the NBC drama Matlock, originally aired as the eleventh episode of the show's second season.
Synopsis[]
Matlock defends a Santa accused of murder — Brian Emerson (Bryan Cranston). His ex-wife, Maggie Crowley (Lise Hilboldt), was murdered at 5 minutes past 10pm, while hosting a Christmas party populated by Santa Clauses. Matlock also plays Santa to their daughter, Wendy (Jandi Swanson), and spreads some Christmas cheer on a judge who has lost his Christmas spirit.
After Tyler was hit in the head, Philip Tracy (Howard George), whose wife, Miriam (Judith Baldwin), left him seven years ago, confesses he had gone to the party that night to have it out with Maggie, and that he made all those threatening phone calls to her because of what she had done to Miriam. He also says he was so mad, he could have killed her himself, but someone beat him to it, and that he got a good look at her killer. Tyler then brings Miriam back as a Christmas gift. Philip asked her why she came back, and she replied that Tyler said Philip still loved her. He replied that she left him, and she responded that he had sent her away. Finally, he tells her he thought she didn’t want him anymore.
Mr. Bono (Peter Wolf) is soon revealed as the culprit behind Maggie’s murder; as he was in a Santa costume when he entered the room while she was on the phone talking to 911, she mistook him for Brian, but his dog, Toto, knew better (because, as Mr. Bono explained, Toto never barked at Maggie or Mr. Bono).
